* "The Chair" from Long Kiss Goodbye

"The Chair" begins with a driving acoustic guitar & bass line, live drums, a fiddle, as well as an underlying drum loop. As the lyrics begin, the loop is brought out more, and a string section breaks in between phrases. After the chorus, the string player (John - who played on both the original record, as well as the "Drummer Boy" EP) breaks into an amazing fiddle section. The bridge features Scott Savage' s percussive prowess on bongos, and Steve & Charlie's moving BGV's. Also, strung throughout, but especially prevalent at the end, are Steve's electric guitar chords, strumming through a cool delay effect. Listen for the fiddle's high pitched build though the fade...

LYRICS:

The Chair - Jars of Clay
Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack
"The Long Kiss Goodbye"

She always knew the things to say
She had a smile to end a frown
Sometimes it seems she didn't notice
Sometimes she dreams
Sometimes she tries to dance

(Chorus)
She calls out "Hi Ho Silver" from her chair
She dreams of somehow saving the day

The chair a pressing door left open
Her heart the key she always turns
A locking peace, no understanding
It was all she knew
And what she held on to

(Chorus)
She calls out "Hi Ho Silver" from her chair
(she calls out "Hi Ho Silver")
She dreams of somehow saving the day
(she dreams)
She rides out west into the sunset
She knew she could, she'd somehow find a way

(Bridge)
Upon the legs that wouldn't carry
Fly away around the sun
And leave the misery, for Heaven
And sometimes dream again the dance
And as the grass grows through the concrete
Life embraces bitter land
She learned to trust, she learned to love
She walked the dream, she walked the dance

(Chorus - repeated twice)

*Songbook finally available:

At last, there is a songbook for the debut jars album with all of the chords and notes. It is primarily written for piano/vocals and has the guitar tab as well. This should now be available at your local Christian bookstore. There is also a limited collector's edition "platinum" version of the debut cd to celebrate the platinum status. This also should be available at your nearest Christian retailer.

*Jars of Coke?

Jars have written a holiday "commercial jingle" for Coke which is being aired right now! The song is a very catchy tune with many layered vocals by Steve, Matt & Charlie. It is for radio only and is an ad for coke but with great jars lyrics and sound. It was recorded last week and the Coke company was so excited that they've already sent them all out to radio stations across the U.S. for airplay. Listen for it now and watch the web site for a sound file going up soon!

*Vibe Central (The Remixes)

Vibe Central (the remixes) contains the following Jars of Clay mixes, remixed by Jeff Savage, brother of drummer Scott Savage: The NEW flood (Savage Flavour Mix), The NEW Liquid ("SJM" Mix), and the brand new version of the newest Jars single "Blind" (Fluffy-Sav-Mix). It's available at ALL Christian retailers and some mainstream retailers. It has the Eric Champion and Imagine This remixes as well.

The Blind remix single debuted at #12 on the National Charts (from CCM update). It was ranked as a potential hitmaker and also is the highest Debut for a single this quarter (so says the charts).

*Treasure the Children

Jars are to perform another benefit concert this Christmas season. It will take place at Caffe Milano on November 26 and all funds from the tickets, which are $100, will go directly to the Child Abuse Prevention Center of Middle Tennessee. This is bound to be a very special event with guest appearances from Alison Kraus, and possibly Fleming & John, as well as another very special "unannounced" guest. If anyone goes to this we'd love a review!

*Concert Review: November 4, 1996, Charleston, SC

dperry@csranet.com (David W. Perry, DMD)

A last minute change of venue found Jars of Clay at the Music Farm in Charleston, SC. They were originally slated to perform at the Gaillard Auditorium where the Charleston Symphony plays. The Music Farm building, once an 1800's train depot, has been renovated several times, but with concrete floors and exposed rafters, was not particularly acoustically stable. The proprietors welcomed JoC with a standing only, smoky, but truly intimate setting.

Matchbox 20 paved the way with a lively driving mix. The Gufs from Milwaukee, followed showing a more mature platform with a variety of songs lead primarily by electric guitars and bass. Anticipation from the crowd was acute following the Gufs performance. After about six members of the road crew completed set changes and spread out the carpets, the lights dimmed with a haunting, updated string solo intro to Liquid. With lights slammed on, and fans screaming, the triple harmonies broke through. The set consisted of about 15 songs with most of the debut album plus several new tunes. Dan introduced Blame as a song from the upcoming album. He also shared his time this past summer with his grandparents, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, and how it helped him better understand the meaning of everlasting love.

The song that followed, a gentle melody about how time flies by, was beautiful. Crazy Times rocked the house; and Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows, a personal favorite, but unfamiliar to most, spilled forth with Dan and Steve sharing the mics at the end. Steve really seems to enjoy the electric guitar which adds depth to the sound. They also sang what I think was Fade to Grey, then Flood, which of course brought even the newcomers around. The new songs were strong...making it hard to wait for the next album to hear them again. With the addition of Roddie Chiong on strings, JoC's live intense melodies step into a new dimension. It solidly reflects the debut album and more, particularly with Liquid, Boy on a String, and the new version of Blind. I was hoping they would do The Chair which rocks with strings and percussion.

Even after weeks of touring without a break, Dan's voice was strong and clear. Steve, Charlie, and Matt's BGV's smooth and steady. Scott and Aaron complete the live presence with powerful drums and bass. In this antique building, if they hadn't been Jars of Clay, they probably couldn't have pulled it off as well. They seemed to give a 100%, with band interaction throughout. I think they really like each other. Almost immediately after the show, the guys came out to mingle. It's a great way to see them as "good ole sweaty" people instead of actors on a stage. Being a thirty-something fan, I was a little hesitant to approach the youthful crew, but age seemed irrelevant and I was glad. This "talky time" really completed the "Jars of Clay experience". Their direction is unchanging, their commitment and faith very sure, their ministry straightforward...their horizon ablaze.

*Concert Review: McCain Auditorium, KS

tufano@ksu.edu (Michael J. Tufano)

I went into McCain Auditorium tonight not really knowing what to expect. This was the first time that i was going to see Jars play a full set. The longest i have seen them play before was about 40 minutes. I was also very excited to see Roddy, the new violinist.

The opening bands were great. Huckleberry opened up. They are a band located in Lawrence, Kansas, which is about an hour from here. They are a Christian band with a style similar to JoC, so needless to say, they were a hit. I highly recommend checking them out if you get the chance. The Gufs came on next, and were a very talented band. I look forward to hearing more of them in the future. Unlike the rest of the times that i have seen Jars, this crowd was there just to see Jars of Clay. When the lights dimmed and Roddy started playing the intro to Liquid the place went nuts. Even when you know it's coming it's a great feeling to see Jars perform with a live violinist. They followed Liquid with Like a Child, and the crowd loved it. It was refreshing to finally be in a crowd where i wasn't the only one who knew all their songs. They followed with Boy on a String, and did an incredible job with it. The night went on great. People totally got into their new songs. Blame really got the place rockin'.

I, as well as many other people in the audience, had seen Jars open there for PFR on the last show of the Great Lengths tour about a year ago. Dan made a reference back to that show (in which they only were able to play for 20 minutes even though many people were there to see them). It almost came off as an apology for not being able to play much that night, and i think many people there really appreciated it. It meant a lot that he remembered playing here last year.

Dan stopped for a minute to explain 2 Cor. 4:7, much more in depth than i have heard him do before, then started singing He acappella. Steve joined in on the guitar, then slowly the rest of the guys jumped in with them, and it was truly an amazing arrangement of the song. They sounded great going from Fade to Grey to Blind, and the crowd loved it. I must admit, their version of Blind totally took me off guard. I don't think i have ever seen them add the hard touch to it before. The first half of the song was the same as the CD version, but the second half went a whole new direction. We loved it. Near the end of the night they played Worlds Apart. After the final part of the song (the part with no stopping between lines) the guys kept playing and Dan sang a chorus of Halleluiah's. It was great to hear, and added a great touch to the song.

The played Flood for the last song of course, and it was incredible. The crowd was just insane. The encore, however blew it away. They came out and played Love Song For a Savior and Dan finished it with Amen. You could tell that they were doing the song totally out of Worship. And then Four Seven- It was the first time i have heard it live, and i thought the roof was going to come down.

After the show i hung out in the lobby and met the guys from all three bands. It was great to finally meet the guys after being a fan for a year and a half. And Matt, if you are reading this, I'm sorry i called you Steve. I was so pumped that i finally got to meet you guys i wasn't thinking! :)

I'm pushing an opportunity to go to Trinidad and Tobago for the summer to establish a ministry of my own. I have to work with my high school (that I graduated from last June), we've had some problems getting the trip off the ground. I'm worried that we won't be prepared, starting this late, for a June missions trip. Last time we started preparing in Sept. and still weren't ready in June.

I'm also trying to establish myself as a freelance writer, and theater lighting techie. So far ALL my leads have fallen through, but I need God to help me get my career off the ground. I'm also trying to start a band

I just found out that a really great christian girl, that I really looked up to at school, is pregnant. But to top it all of she is dropping out of school, for many reasons not just because of the baby. She is really at peace about it all and will be keeping the baby and she is also getting married and soon going to college. I just ask that you all pray for her, pray that she has no problems and that all goes well and that life really works out for her.

i'm a teenager in the northern part of the country. As selfish as it sounds, i'd like someone to pray for me. i'm on the brink right now and i'm slipping in faith. you see, i used to be an addict of many substances and i also used to be in suicidal depression as well. with God's help i was pulled out of my pit, but just recently i've become a creature of the flesh. i drank myself into a euphoric state of consciousness two nights ago because of some personal conflict and i've also engaged in some sexual acts i said that i'd never participate in. i'm in need right now and i just need someone to pray for the no named backslider that is me. please. i really need some help right now. And it would be much appreciated. thanx bros and sises in Christ.

lately my 12 year old brother has been experiencing weird pains in his chest that make him really weak.doctors say that is some kind of heart problem. he has missed a lot of school and it scares him pretty bad. i would appreciate it if you would keep him and me in your prayers. it has been really hard on me too and sometimes i feel guilty that i don't live with him and my mom. also, i have a lot of non-Christian friends at school and it would help a lot if you would pray that i could be a good witness to them. Thanks!

Hey. I just want to thank everyone in advance who is praying for me in this area. I'm a college student in North Carolina studying music. I know God has called me to be a worship leader/Christian musician, but right now I'm not playing anywhere. I've led worship several times in several different places, and with good response, but none lately. So, if you could pray that an opportunity arises to play my music and make money, or so that I can find a job willing to work with my playing-for-free schedule. God bless.

What I'm writing about is that I have a prayer request. For the past two years or more, I've been suffering of severe migraine headaches. They have caused vomiting and are sometimes throbbing. Will you please pray that God will take away these headaches? I've found that the best medicine for anything is prayer. It's never harmful, It has no funny aftertaste, and it works better than medication. Please pray for me.

At my church youth group, we are believing in God for 300 teens to be saved and join our youth group within three years (not saying our youth group is the best). I, as one of the older members of the youth group, know that it is important to have someone believing in prayer with you that these things will happen. I'm writing knowing there are over 4,000 subscribers (it was 3,000 something last time), who will be willing to believe with us.

I have a prayer request for a math teacher at my school. He has taught me since tenth grade and he has been the sweetest, kindest God-fearing man I know. He fell on Sunday (10/27/96) at church and ruptured his spleen. It's serious enough that he is in intensive care and after he gets his spleen removed he will be recovering for 6-8 weeks. He needs God's help and a lot of prayer. God works in mysterious ways and I know that this will work for the good of His kingdom.

Most of you heard about my friend Chad and his cancer. Well, I just found out that the last time he came home for chemo he got good news! When he started treatment, they did tests that dictate proteins called cancer markers. (The higher the number, the more cancer you have.) When he started he was at 1600, the first round of chemo he dropped to about 165, and this week he was at THREE! If he is still that low next time, he is done with chemo! He will be considered in remission and if after 5 years it hasn't come back, he's totally cured! Praise God! But, still please pray that he stays healthy and the cancer does not return!

Thanks so much everybody!

I am a first year college student now, but through high school, I had the privilege of meeting and knowing a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Liner. I learned today, that she has cancer. I don't know what kind of cancer it may be, but I pray that whatever it is, that it may strengthen her as a Christian and person. She was almost like a mother to me. Unlike most other teachers, she cared for her classes and went out of her way to meet our needs. Over her classroom, she had posters up spreading the Word and would occasionally invite the class to church with her. She is truly one of God's gifts, and it would be an awful thing to see her suffer like this.

Just last year, she experienced the loss of her mother-in-law. It would be a loss to the teaching community and to the classes she reached to see her go. I ask that whoever reads this, please lift her up in your prayers. May she have the strength to carry on and the peace of mind to know that God is there for her during her times of need.

Hi! My name is Catie, and I would appreciate if you guys would pray for my youth group. My youth minister moved about 2 weeks ago, and it's really hard adapting to doing things without him, and making sure that every part of our youth ministry continues until God shows us who He has for us now. I know everything that's happening is in Gods will, because my youth minister put such a huge amount of prayer into his decision to leave. It was a very hard thing for him to do, but I really admire his faithfulness and willingness to make sacrifices for his God. But that didn't make it any easier to say good-bye. We all love him dearly. Just please pray that God will be with him as he starts his new ministry, and with us, as we strive to do Gods will.

Thanks!

I am a freshman in college and finding many challenges to my faith and Christian action (which is very important to me). I have been blessed to have a Christian roommate, whom by the way, introduced me to Jars. But I am finding myself slipping even though I have lots of Christian friends. My only quiet times are with my music (I don't get much out of "going to church"). Lately I have been in great witnessing positions during conversations and such, but feel like I am letting Him down. If you could please pray that I could regain my confidence with sharing my faith and that I could regain my own knowledge of it. Also I would like to ask for prayers for a friend that claims to be (a searching) agnostic. The other day I was listening to my Jars CD while talking to her about various Christian bands (I had just come from the Newsboys concert in Seattle). She was kind of lost in the conversation never having heard of most of them.

Then Flood came on. And I mentioned that is was by one of the Christian bands. She was surprised that they were Christian! Her first question was, "Does this song have Christian lyrics?!!!" I told her that it did and we started talking about it and God and "stuff". It was really interesting, to say the least! She had a lot of questions that I am glad that she asked. I'd like to ask for prayers for her that God will give her the answers that she is looking for. And also that God will speak through me when she comes to me about her questions. (a good number of her/our friends are Christian and she doesn't want any of them to know for fear of rejection.) Thank you and may God bless you and be near you always!

Her name is Courtney Pulido and she goes to Oak Park High and she is very sick. The doctors don't know what is wrong with her. At first they thought it was appendicitis but now they don't know. I have never cared about someone the way I do for her. Please pray for her she is very special to me. I know that the Lord has something planned for her and I also know that prayer is the best medicine around so please help me heal her.

Thank you and God Bless,
