Lunch with Jars of Clay

The offer came ever so non-chalantly, "Would you like to have lunch with Jars of Clay?". My answer was a quick, "Gee, let me think, OK.". From there the time and date was set, and I began to have some time to think about this opportunity to have lunch with one of the premier Christian bands. I began to wonder would I be let down, as I previously have been by their behavior seeing human flaws up close and personal or would I see a quality representation of a group of guys living their lives for God. I then decided to allow the lunch to be the judge.

We met at a restraunt in Marina Del Rey in Southern California. All of the introductions were made and right away the band presented themselves in a manner that was welcoming, genuine, friendly, and accesable. We sat down and began to converse, the discussion ranged from Dan's upcoming marriage to the purpose and direction of Christian music. I was highly impressed by their desire to be an effective tool used of God to impact the world around them. There was evidence of conscience efforts to meet the needs of both their Christian and secular concert goers. They also shared how they believe their music has a purpose and mission, which is reaching out to a hurting generation that does not know God's grace, as well as building the church with edification. As I left lunch I was "overjoyed" (pun intended) by how real the guys were. Seeing first hand that their hearts are in-line with God's. My high expectations were surprisingly superexceeded.

Later that same night I was also blessed with the chance to attend a release party in Hollywood. A good friend of mine and I had the chance to see them play an acoustic set of four of their new songs, only a few feet away from the stage. It was great, but what was even more impresive was that Dan, Matt, Stephen, and Charlie were talking with secular record, radio, and retail executives. It was obvious that some of these people would never step foot into a church, yet Jars had a chance to maybe plant some seeds. As my friend Dustin commented, "They are a bright light in a very dark world." That is what all of this, selling all the albums, the concerts, everything, is all about.

From: Libbyp3@aol.com

September 16th has come and gone, but left in it's wake a new era for Jars of Clay --The release of Much Afraid! I'd been waiting for that day for months... years actually, since after the release of the self-titled in '95. Jars, however, appearing at the Roxy theatre in Atlanta modestly shrugged with Dan asking, "How many of you have picked up our new record?" To a whooping crowd, Dan smiled, then turned and said, "Hey guys, we're gonna get to eat tonight!"

The floor seats in front of the stage had been removed to allow for a larger standing crowd of over 1000 with an equally packed balcony. But Jars created somewhat of a coffeehouse atmosphere, dispersing songs among road stories and lyrical history. I really enjoyed the personal touch. A song really sticks with a story behind it. The set list seemed longer than usual with 15 or so songs. From the new record, Jars brought us Tea and Sympathy (inspired by a coffee/tea house in New York), Overjoyed, Five Candles, Crazy Times and Much Afraid (previewed simply as "a song moving from a place of fear to a place of faith"). Even though most had heard small glimpses of that song, the silent respect from the crowd showed the song's spiritual potential as a plea to non-believers as well as believers. I was curious as to how Jars' live show would capture the new lyrics and sound of Fade to Grey. The techno-beat was indeed there, but I noticed Scott joined in after the intro. That song gets more amazing everytime I hear it!

And for the first time, I saw Matt don an electric guitar for Five Candles and Crazy Times. With Crazy Times, if Steve hadn't played his guitar with his teeth, I think the crowd would have wailed (since it's grown to be an expected occurence). And Tea and Sympathy was topped off with Charlie and his Hammond B-3.

Dan shifted gears in his introduction to Worlds Apart, but *definitely* got the point across... "Here we are... with the new record coming out." "And here YOU (audience) are! And we're sitting here thinking... Gosh, we're Good! Ummm... but we're not supposed to do that. This song is about *dealing* with pride and tearing down and building on the things that matter most." Even though Mancy A'lan Kane wasn't with Jars, the chorus sounded like a female choir in tune with it's message, from the crowd up in the balcony. God can use that song in such incredible ways!

Over the past couple of years, Dan has somehow "convinced" Steve that he knows someone noteworthy in every city of the U.S. True or False... who knows? But in Atlanta, Steve dubbed Dan close and personal friends of Brave's pitcher Greg Maddux. It's ALSO ironic that "Country Roads" take them home to every city they frequent! :) And during the acoustic set, I *finally* heard Matt's cappucino imitation! He thanked Atlanta with a little curtsy, raised eyebrows, and a smile! :) Good Coffee, Strong Coffee then followed with a real live KICK!

And then there was Flood. There's NO escaping it... The audience NEVER gets tired of it! Three-quarters through, the lights were cut and the music stopped for what seemed like a minute, leaving the crowd wondering if they'd actually left the stage.

I understand the *pogo-ing* thing a lot better now. In a room where over 1000 people are touching elbows, the only way to move is UP!

Even though it was Jars' special night, Plumb refused to take a back seat. Their opening set consisted of 5 songs including Crazy, Pennyless, Unforgivable, with a alternating medley of Endure and Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes. Tiffany Arbuckle has a real musical energy which resonates into the crowd.

The fall tour promises to be a kickin' Bubble Maker's Dream. Pray for the guys, for their strength and patience... and that God may continue to use them so the world can catch a true glimpse of who HE is.

*Much Afraid Statistics and Information:

Much Afraid debuted at # 8 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart the first week of its' release. It was also the # 1 Alternative Rock Record in the World that week! It is the # 2 Christian Album, barely beaten out by the Lee Ann Rimes CD.
Jars also sets a record first week for any Christian artist (Lee Ann Rimes did more, but she's not a "Christian market artist"...) with over 100,000 certified sales the first week.

In other news:

1) A misprint appeared on the CD - it was meant to say www.jarsofclay.com hosted by NetRail (NOT Net Train!). Unfortunately, this was not caught before the covers were pressed, but we need to give them credit for so graciously hosting our site! We would highly recommend them as internet providers... Please visit their site: www.netrail.net

2) "Hymn" is missing from thousands of mainstream cassettes. It was a factory glitch and is being fixed. It is listed on the j-card, but not on the tape. Anyone getting a tape like this should send it to Silvertone for a replacement (email us for the address). Most local stores will replace them as well.

3) "Seatbelt Tuba" is an extra CD that comes with Much Afraid for those who buy it at Family Christian Bookstores across America. It includes acoustic one-take versions of Good Coffee, Strong Coffee, Liquid and Crazy Times. It can be ordered by calling the toll free Family Christian Stores phone number: 1-800-887-6555. Order yours today, as they won't be available much longer!

Jars Question and Answer Session, September 16, 1997, Family Christian Store, Jonesboro, GA

Dan: Hi There!

Steve: We should have brought our suntan lotion with us! We've just got a little bit of time cause we're running behind, but we wanted to take some time to take questions from you guys. I guess we kind of found that we learn more about each other through that rather than shaking hands and signing autographs so ask us anything... be it stupid, silly, serious, controversial (?). Just raise your hands and we'll try to squeeze everybody in.

Question: Do you guys plan to make an impact on the secular world with your new album like you did with Flood?

Dan: I think our hope is very much that our music can span beyond the four walls of the church. I think it's always been important to us just to see what we're about as Christians and who we are... that loving people just doesn't stay self-contained within the church.

Question: What is touring like? And is life as good as they say it is?

Dan: Who's They??

Steve: Right! Wow... We've got to talk to them and smack'em around...

Dan: It is... and it's not.

Charlie: It usually starts out really fun for the first couple of weeks cause it's new and then maybe a month or so into it, it just starts getting to be more work I guess. It's pretty exhausting spiritually and physically... but overall we love meeting people and we love performing so usually it's fun.

Question: Do any of you own a chipmunk?

Dan: That's a negative!

Steve: I own numerous stuffed animals!

Matt: I just rent one.

Steve: Matt rents a chipmunk

Charlie: I don't own a chipmunk... Do you own a chipmunk?

Dan: There's this company called Rent-a-Rodent.

Question: What do you guys do together or separately to stay in touch spiritually while on the road?

Matt: I'll answer for all of us! We have a relationship with our pastor at our home church back in Nashville who we see as kind of a mentor. We all have other relationships that are very important to us as far as fellowship and accountablility (wives, and girlfriends and just friends) And other than that, it's something we're committed to on an individual basis as well.

Question: Who were your musical influences growing up?

Steve: Growing up, I think the Beatles were a big influence for me.

Charlie: The Beatles to the Police, Abba, Smitty.

Steve: Between the four of us we have like 1000 CD's so we listen to a lot of music.

Question: Do you guys worry about fashion?

Steve: I think that answer lies in what we're wearing right now!

Charlie: (to audience) Do YOU guys worry about our fashion?

Steve: Sometimes for pictures and stuff they have people that bring clothes cause I think by nature we're just kinda Gap poster children... just t-shirts and jeans. Usually we have to have someone tell us what they think is cool.

Question: How did you guys form?

Steve: I think it goes back to Psalm 139

Dan: Steve and Charlie and I were going to the same college and lived on the same dorm floor. We were writing music together mostly for fun and things progressed from there. We won a battle of the bands competition that gave us some label interest. And we needed a guitar player so we enlisted Matt Odmark who was Charlie's best friend from the sandbox and that was kind of how we all came together as Jars of Clay.

Question: How did you get your name?

Charlie: There's a scripture in II Corinthians 4:7 that says "we have this treasure in jars of clay that shows that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us". We were really impacted by the analogy of the clay jar, how fragile that is but at the same time God choses to entrust in us His Spirit and how precious that is to us. Kind of that oxymoron I guess you could call it.

Steve: The mystery of the Gospel!

Question: Have you had an impact on any secular bands?

Steve: We had the opportunity to go out with a group called the Samples which actually taught us a lot about who we wanted to be out with. In the midst of that tour we had to split ways because we believed in a lot of different things and that became an issue that we couldn't get past. So we just agreed to kind of say "ok it's not working out for either of us", but there were another couple of groups on that tour... Matchbox 20 who was ok to go with and actually the Gufs, the opening band. We really developed a friendship with them and by the end of the tour, actually, it was awesome to see that we were able to give them Bibles and it wasn't something where we were stepping over any personal lines. We were at a point with these people where we could give them the Word and give them books and say hey think about this! Because they got a different interpretation of the Gospel than they were used to in a relation-type situation versus someone preaching.

Charlie: With them it was neat to just be their friend and to be on tour, and then they would notice things and they would ask us questions - and it was exciting for us to feel like they were interested and noticed stuff and we didn't have to say... "alright here's the deal and get on our little platform", so...

Steve: We got to go out with Sting for three dates which was fun in Texas and that was probably the highlight...

Dan: We had a HUGE impact on him, in fact, I think his entire next record is...

Steve: ... All about US... actually!

Charlie: No... no.

Dan: We took a picture with him.

Steve: Five minutes of fame!

Question: Where did you get the name Much Afraid?

Steve: That's the name of our new record. And, it's released today and it's available here at Family Christian Store.

Dan: Seatbelt Tuba

Steve: Seatbelt Tuba is I think the issue people need to know about. I read a book on our second tour with PFR (we started to read books on the road which is a great thing). It was called Hinds' Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard...

Dan: Which can also be found at your local Family Christian Store.

Steve: Much Afraid is the name of the lead character in the book. It's really a story about a journey conceptually from fear to faith, hence the name Much Afraid. That's kind of the umbrella that we wanted to write the record around and kind of base the songs from. And beyond that we were kind of much afraid that this record wouldn't do as well as the first one so.... umm... Thanks for coming! ... We all felt like we liked the title. You know they thought it was kind of too serious so we had to put some guilty people in bathing suits on the front to make it a little more humorous and lighten it up... umm cause we're not that serious a people!

Question: How did you get started as a band?

Charlie: We got started as a band in college writing songs on our dorm floor. We were all friends that lived on the same floor. And I took a studio recording class at school, most of us were majoring in music. So we would go into the studio on weekends and record the songs that we had written. We continued to do that over the course of a year. We got a pretty long demo done that we shopped.

Question: What is your newest song?

Steve: Well, the one on radio now is umm... what's it called?

Dan: It's called Crazy Times?

Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah... Crazy Times.

Dan: In fact, you can get that here at your local bookstore!

Question: Who does the main writing as far as lyrics?

Steve: Lyrics is this guy (points to Dan) and he (points to Matt) contributes a little bit.

Dan: That's me!

Steve: Usually when Dan gets wacky and he (Matt) has to straighten him out. That's what it amounts to.

Question: How long have you guys been together?

Steve: About four years?

Dan: We've only been dating for about a year now though, really it's just been friends up until that. ...Ok.

Steve: Yeah... three and a half years... since winter of '94.

Question: Why is the Coffee Song not on this record?

Dan: That comes back to the other issue... Seatbelt Tuba.

Charlie: Which is why we're here.

Steve: In our shows we occasionally do a song about coffee that's kind of an - aaah... thank you! (a fan hands Steve a bag of gourmet coffee) ... hence the gifts occasionally. It's the kind of a thing we wanted to leave for our shows, because we figure people need an incentive to come see us in concert. And we did put it on the little EP that's with the CD. I think they are selling it now. There are only like 20,000 of them that they printed up that has 3 acoustic songs and one of them is the Coffee Song so a few lucky people will get that.

Question: What's more important, your music or your message?

Dan: Well I think it's both. I think it just depends on who you're dealing with. Because for us they kind of go hand in hand. There's almost no separation between the two. I think if your going to do music, anything that you do you're going to want to do to the best of your ability if it's for God. And secondly the message of Christianity is such an important one so we think they really go hand in hand. I don't think there is one that is more important than the other.

Charlie: We couldn't really have one without the other.

Steve: No... It's kind of a peanut butter and chocolate kind of thing.

Matt: You can't eat just one!

Question: Who is married:

Dan: I'm married.

Steve: I'm married.

Charlie: Fiancee'd (or engaged)!

Matt: No comment...

Question: Do you have any children?

Steve: No kids.

Question: Do you actually write back to people on the internet?

Dan: We do occasionally... Some of us are having computer problems right now so...

Question: What are your e-mail addresses?

Charlie: Mine is Wildmax7... no spaces.

Matt: And that's on AOL.

Charlie: We try to... we kind of go through stages like I'll be really good at answering e-mail for awhile and then I won't answer for a while, then Matt will...

Steve: And sometimes honestly some questions just don't merit a response and they're motivated out of something other than really wanting to know an answer. It's one of the challenges...if you think of it... Pray for us about this. It's a line that we have to continually draw between...

Question: (to Charlie) Why do you wear fingernail polish?

Charlie: It was inspired by my nasty habit of biting my nails. And it's working so far!

Matt: I don't bite his nails anymore!

Question: I heard you might be doing some international touring in '98. Where are you going?

Matt: I don't know.

Dan: It's not really set up yet, but we have interests in Australia and New Zealand, Germany, Singapore and Malasia.

Question: What is your Christian background?

Steve: I'll speak for all of us!

Dan: Why don't you speak for all of us..

.
Steve: We were all youth group kids, all products of church youth groups and we all through different experiences in youth group and camp and retreats were exposed to who the person Jesus was and I think our parents modeled that to a degree.

Question: What college did you go to?

Steve: I see those t-shirts running around here actually.

Dan: Do you really?

Steve: Yeah. Excellent.

Charlie: Greenville College. It's in Illinois... not South Carolina.

Question: What is your target audience by way of age?

Dan: That's a very good question. Mostly the elderly, I believe... 60 +

Steve: And we still haven't gotten it right yet actually.

Charlie: I think we're surprised at the age span of people that come to our concerts and that we hear from.

Steve: It's cool. Sometimes families will come together which I think is a great thing.

Question: How is life different than it was before you were a band?

Steve: We're not home near as much as we'd like to be, definitely. Friendships are tough to keep up with. There's more in the equation when you're gone a lot.

(Family Christian Store then had a drawing for a handmade clay jar that was signed by the guys.)

Dan: Alright!

Charlie: She's overwhelmed!

Steve: I guess we've got a few more minutes... Anything silly or controversial? Let's go left AND right...

Question: How do you feel about the Lounge version of Flood?

Steve: Aah... we love it!

Dan: (to audience) How do YOU guys feel about it?

Steve: It was fun... They did a video for it and we got to be in it. We got to try our hand at choreography. We're definitely no Paula Abdul or Janet Jackson, that's for sure.

Dan: Speak for yourself!

Question: Is the enhanced portion of the new CD different from the Crazy Times Cd?

Steve: I don't know what's on the enhanced portion...

Question: How do you feel when people cover your songs?

Dan: It's an honor!

Charlie: We don't get to hear it happen very often but...

Question: When did you start playing instruments?

Dan: I was eight when I started taking piano lessons.

Charlie: I was in first grade when I started taking piano.

Steve: It was about first or second grade.

Question: What do you think of the new album?

Steve: I think we'd be really disappointed if we sold only one CD. I mean honestly, we spent the last three months and we've been praying about it and we hope that it takes off and it affects as many people as the first one. I mean it's awesome and it's humbling to be used by God like this.

Steve: A couple of more questions...

Question: Deer Cows?

Steve: Umm...

Charlie: You just have to squint your eyes... you can see them!

Matt: You can see them anywhere, pretty much.

Question: How many people go on tour with you?

Dan: Our entourage...

Steve: We don't have a hair dresser. We do have a pedicure lady that comes with us... for Charlie!

Charlie: We have a drummer and bass player that play with us as a live band. We have a sound man, a light man, a merch guy and one other guy and a road manager.

Question: What Christian bands do you like?

Steve: Sixpence None the Richer

Charlie: Old Choir

Steve: Fernando Ortega

Dan: David Wilcox

Charlie: Over the Rhine, Rich Mullins

Question: Do you have any advice for people who are interested in the Christian music business?

Steve: Make sure that there's nothing else you're better at. I'm kidding... our pastor told us to say that. I'm joking, but there are a lot of things about this, coming from college that we had no idea we were going to encounter. Many issues regarding becoming a role model and being put on a pedestal and trying to handle that AND being transparent... If this is something that God has called someone to, I think you should continually be in prayer about it - and definitely it helps to practice.

Charlie: We just found that out.

Dan: Eat right, always wear your seatbelt, brush after meals...

Charlie: Wear your seatbelt tuba.

Steve: Anymore questions... We've got this little girl waiting back here...

Question: How old are you?

Steve: I'm 12.

Dan: I just turned 15 so I'm getting my learner's permit soon.

Steve: OK...

Dan: I'm 24.

Steve: I'm 22.

Charlie: I'm 23.

Matt: I'm also 23.

Dan: They're ushering us out. I guess our time is up. We thank you all for coming. Sorry we couldn't have been here longer and spend more time. We'll hopefully see y'all tonight at the concert. See ya!

*People Magazine October 1997:

While gospel star Kirk Franklin has proven that one can soulfully hoot and holler in the House of the Lord and reap financial rewards, this Nashville foursome praises God the old-fashioned quiet way. Pious and boys-next-door sweet, they scored an MTV hit with their single "Flood" and became the first gospel act to go platinum with their first effort, 1995's self-titled Jars of Clay. Playing it safe and (commercially) sound, the guys don't stray far from the road already travelled on their latest disc. They frame their Beatlesque harmonies with sharp melodies and delicately strummed acoustic guitars, occasionally pepping things up with danceable rythms ("Fade to Grey") and fleeting psychadelic touches ("Tea and Sympathy"). But for all their wimpy goodness, they're bold when it comes to resisting the platinum-baiting temptation to secularize their message, spouting such sentiments as "Sweet Jesus, never let me go." Now that ought to give MTV a good jolt.

"Gentle Rockers Jars of Clay"

Though the title of this Christian band's new disc is Much Afraid (Silvertone), gentle yet strong vocals, heartfelt lyrics and soothing music that rocks subtly is as comforting as a hug from someone you love and trust.

*Concert Review 9/22/97: State Fair Of Oklahoma

I just recently purchased the album "Much Afraid" and really enjoy it. A few days after I purchased the album I went to the Jars Of Clay concert. They came out a song off of their latest release "Much Afraid." As soon as the music started, the packed out arena began jumping around. Following that song (Weighed Down) were: "Like A Child," "Boy On A String," "Truce," and "Overjoyed." When the band began to sing "Blind" it started out as the slow album version and then all of a sudden the song exploded into a rock upbeat song. Then, three stools were brought out onto the stage and Dan began to explain how that when they are doing a show at a coffee shop and are in the middle of a slow song that's when the cappacino machine would go off. That's when Matt did his impression of a cappacino machine, and went right in to the song "Good Coffee, Strong Coffee." This was my first time to hear the "Coffee Song," and I thought that it was a pretty good song. After that they went into "Fly Farther," then Dan said, "We would like to dedicate this next song to the memory of Rich Mullins who was killed in a car wreck about 2 days ago," and went right into "Worlds Apart." I felt that it was an appropriate song and went with what Dan had to say. Immediately following "Worlds Apart" Dan led the whole arena in singing "Hallelujah." The next song on the agenda was "Tea And Sympathy" followed by "Much Afraid," and "Art In Me." Then the band performed a few more familiar songs. They started with "Sinking," which was followed by "Crazy Times," "Fade to Grey" and "Flood." After the performance of "Flood" Jars left the stage which left a ton of fans (not ready to leave) screaming for more. Jars came back for an encore. Dan began to explain where the name "Jars Of Clay" comes from, and as we all know it comes from 2Corinthians 4:7. They went into the song "Love Song For A Saviour" and then into "Four Seven". After the performance, Jars took a final bow and left the stage for the evening.

Hi, some of you may remeber a request I put in here last issue . . . I asked for prayer about a "decision". 8^/> Well, we made the decision! We (my family of 5) are going to travel around the country visiting missions and places like that. We will live in a motorhome that we bought about 3 weeks ago, and we plan to do it for about a year, leaving late Dec./early Jan., but who knows how God will "adjust" our plans to fit His? The reason I said to pray for my attitude about it is because I am not very thrilled about this. I do not like change. But I know that we are in God's will in doing this, which makes me feel worse about my reluctance . . . So please continue to pray for us, we are having to rid ourselves of a lot of uneeded stuff, which is a little difficult, and I'm not too sure how well it will work with 5 people living in such close quarters. Plus we just need help getting everything ready . . . thanks much for your thoughts and prayers. Grace and Peace to all

My mom and dad are not getting along. He has moved in with his sister and very mad at my mom. I know that she still loves him, but I don't know what he feels about her. I know that things are going to be okay, because I trust in the Lord to make them okay, but I don't know what is going to happen. Pl;ease pray that our family stays together, and that the devil doesn't have a hand in this situation one little bit.

I really appreciate it and please feel free to write me here anybody!! I love :) getting e-mail.

Hi, I've got some bad news. Last night my brother fell 100 feet off a cliff and rolled 60 more feet. He broke his leg and parts of his face around the eyes. He has cuts and bruises all over his body, his eyes are swelled and he can't open them. PLEASE pray that the Lord will heal him *completely*, and will comfort him. Please pray for my family too. I know the Lord will use this for His *glory*! It was a miracle that he didn't die, even the doctors were amazed that he wasn't hurt any worse. Who knows what could have happened, he could have been paralyzed or even worse. I just thank and praise the Lord for protecting and saving my brothers life!

A few days later:
My brother Matt is doing good. Yesterday we found out that he has blood clots behind his eye and that he may need surgery on his broken leg. Please pray that the blood clots will go away on their own and that he wont need surgery on his leg.

*Crazy Times Mainstream Radio Update:

Big week for "Crazy Times" folks!!

We got adds in three key markets - Atlanta (99X), Dallas, & Seattle! This will push the charting higher, as stations in bigger markets are weighted more heavily.

Following are the latest mainstream radio reports on stations reporting the "Crazy Times" single.

There are 48 stations reporting upward motion, 30 reporting downward motion. (Eight adds, no drops!) 114 stations reported playing the single on mainstream radio, and it's been played over 2500 times thus far in that market. If the single is going to continue to make it, it is CRUCIAL that listeners call in and request the song on *mainstream* rock stations!

Please encourage requests, especially on those markets that showed either no change or downward motion this past week, as well as stations that have just added the single. Requests are the best way for fans to make a difference!!!
